Georgetown bested Harvard in a dramatic lacrosse game yesterday. The score was tied at seven different points and neither team ever lead by more than two points. After several road games the home game came as a welcome relief and a major victory for the Hoyas against 11th ranked Harvard. The player of the game was Georgetown's Rickey Mirabito, who contributed two goals in the 4th quarter and the game winner in overtime.
Both teams went hard the whole game and never let up but the best was to come at the end of the game. With two minutes to go in regulation, the Hoya's trailed 6 to 7 when junior attackman Ricky Mirabito got his second goal of the game to tie the score at 7 goals apiece. A mere 19 seconds later, Georgetown's Todd Cochran, put the ball in the net to put the Hoyas up 8 to 7 with only 55 seconds left in the game. It would prove to be more time than Harvard needed to even the score as Harvard freshman, Jeff Cohen, found the top left corner of the Hoya net to once again tie the game with 22 seconds remaining.
In overtime, the Hoyas controlled the ball. The Harvard defense generated a number of loose balls but was unable to capitalize as they were called for pushing several times as well. Almost three minutes into the four minute overtime, Hoya attackman, Craig Dowd, fed the ball to Rickey Mirabito who put it in the net with a low stick side shot.
