Annual AIMS Conference includes talk by "Three Cups of Tea" co-author
If your child has a school holiday on Monday (November 9)...it's a good thing. However, Monday is not a day off for many private school teachers and administrators who will be attending the Association of Independent Maryland Schools (AIMS) Conference at the Baltimore Convention Center. The annual conference is an energizing and informative day of professional development...and that's a good thing.
Setting the tone for the day will be keynote speaker David Oliver Relin, co-author of Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace... One School at a Time. In the bestselling book, journalist Relin and author Greg Mortenson recount the journey that led Mortenson from a failed 1993 attempt to climb Pakistan’s K2, the world’s second highest mountain, to go on to successfully establish 78 schools in some of the most remote regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Joining Mr. Relin, at the conference, will be a variety of speakers representing different disciplines including:
- Dr. Mario Livio - Internationally known senior astrophysicist at the Hubble Space Telescope Science Institute, bestselling author, and popular lecturer.
- Donna Whyte - An education consultant well known for her practical and motivating strategies designed to help children reach their full potential.
- Dr. Libby Cataldi - Author and previous Head of an AIMS school shares her personal lesson for schools.
- Jessica Hamlin - ART21 will share how this organization supports a growing network of educators who are integrating new art and new ideas into their curriculum and presenting contemporary role models for critical thinking and creative problem-solving for their students.
- Kathy Ernst – Co-founder of an alternative elementary school, math staff developer, educational consultant.
- Marietta McCarty – Author of Little Big Minds, Ms. McCarty has brought philosophy to children for over fifteen years. Her Philosophy in the Third Grade program is nationally acclaimed and she lectures around the country on this one-of-a-kind program.
- Dr. Dennis Denenberg – Millersville University professor and author of 50 American Heroes Every Kid Should Meet who devotes much of his time to motivating future teachers to make history come alive in America’s classrooms.
- Amy Morse – Project Director for the Center for the Development of Coaching and Math Leadership, established to help schools provide coordinated professional development to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics.
- Les Stellman – Attorney-at-law who will discuss ADA and the law for independent schools.
- Julie Broderick and Renee McShane – Broderick teaches 5th grade at The School at Columbia University in New York City and is an adjunct faculty member at Barnard College and Bank Street College of Education. McShane is a leader in assessing students and developing teachers as the Math Liaison at The School at Columbia University, constructing her own unique system of assessing math students in grades 3-5 .
- DJ Schneider-Jensen - Director of Early Childhood Education at the Center for Jewish Education.
In addition to hearing many experts in their fields of study, participants have the opportunity to visit over 100 different companies and organizations that exhibit as part of the conference.
