Veterans Day is an opportunity to honor members of the military who protect our nation at home and abroad. Perhaps one of the best ways to pay tribute to these brave men and women is to teach our children about the significance of their service. This week, in honor of Veterans Day, Our Lady of Mt Carmel Elementary School students will learn the significance of the day through a variety of activities.
Making Cards for Operation Welcome Home
Throughout the week, many Mt. Carmel classes will be making cards for Operation Welcome Home. The cards will then be distributed to members of the military who pass through BWI-Marshall Airport on their way home after a tour of duty. Since March 2007, Operation Welcome Home volunteers have greeted over 250 flights and more than 60,000 soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines. Volunteers from Operation Welcome Home present the veterans with goodie bags and cards made by schoolchildren and other local groups.
Virtual Vietnam Memorial Wall
Additionally, students in 4th and 5th grade are working on an activity during their technology period, which allows them to visit a virtual Vietnam Wall Memorial. Using the internet, students research a soldier whose name is listed on the wall in Washington, D.C. The information will be incorporated into a display of stars, honoring the soldiers, which will be displayed in the school's main hallway.
Local Soldier to Speak
The highlight of the week will be a presentation from Master Sergeant Paul Blitz of the 200th Military Police Command at Fort Meade. On Wednesday, the Essex resident will be talking to students about his personal experience in Iraq.
