Aries, the ram, is a fire sign

If you’re out in the sun around noon in D.C. Thursday, give a thought to being on a planet that is in a queue with the moon, Venus and Mercury in a straight line to the sun. That synchronicity of orbits happens a few minutes after 10 a.m. in the Rockies.

As my friend ElsaElsa said in her bite-sized New Moon report, this conjunction at the Aries new moon means we’re all on fire and rarin’ to go, baby!

However, in the theater of the sky pictured below, if I may direct your attention to the right, you’ll notice the villain in the wings. Pluto, newly present in Capricorn, is squaring the Aries stellium.

Pluto can represent raw fear, raw power … but also raw minerals. You can call him lord of the underworld for dramatic effect, but long before he got that association he was ruler of underground mining and the roots of things growing out of the earth. More like a gnome king than like Darth Vader. Still, there’s no denying he’s associated with compulsion and with things shifting form. Sometimes things are compelled to grow.

Venus, the sun, moon and Mercury are conjunct in Aries, squared by Pluto.

This sky pattern reflects that we’re rarin’ to go and we’re under some compulsion to get moving. If we consciously consider our true deepest motivations, if we mine for the gems of understanding that are our touchstones and align ourselves with their power, then we’ll be on the right track. If we don’t, we may just find ourselves driven by raw fear or raw power.

What we do during this month kicked off by the Aries new moon should be valuable to our sense of identity in the world, which is a central Aries concern. Right now, Pluto is asking us to declare who we are and what we’re all about. The planets of values (Venus) and communication (Mercury) are right there with the two natural lights of the world. And they’re in brave Aries. Go ahead, be bold! But as Elsa says, watch out in traffic.
