Sun sign astrology is everywhere, and it surely does have its uses. Really, who doesn’t like taking a quick peek in the morning to see if today’s stars are auspicious for advancement at work or for sparking up a conversation with that special someone? But that sort of astrology has its drawbacks as well, so I’d like you to help me decide how much of it to blend into the mix here at Examiner.com.
Reading an individual horoscope from a full and accurate birth chart can be like reading a thick and deeply meaningful book. I not only see your sun sign, I see the degree in that sign that your natal sun occupies. I see how your sun is related to your moon and ascendant. These are the main trinity of your nature, reflecting your own personal embodiment on earth of what is in the heavens at the moment of your birth, as you were born into nature and nature returned the favor, being born into you.
I see your personal planets, Mercury, Venus and Mars, and note the long-known correlations of what their placements mean in terms of how you tend to zip or meander from point A to point B in your thinking and communications, what you tend to value and how you tend to express affection, what you’ll fight for and how you tend to express your will.
I see the Greater Benefic and Greater Malefic, Jupiter and Saturn, and how they tend to expand and contract certain areas of your life. I can look at your natal placements of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto for a sense of how you and your age group tend to relate as a group to the same concepts ruled on a personal level by Mercury, Venus and Mars.
I can see where different facets of your self harmonize and where they conflict and how those things affect various areas of your life. Then there are hundreds of other details, such as moon nodes, asteroids and Arabic parts, that I can add to or subtract from the picture. When I put those inside the wheel of the current heavens, there is a vast amount to contemplate about the opportunities available to you right now.
But when I read your sun sign horoscope, I know only one thing about you: your sun sign. When I compare that against the planetary transits occurring now, I can see one thing: how those transits affect your sun sign. You may be struggling with a rough aspect to your moon. You may be benefiting from great transits to your ascendant or re-evaluating your relationships based on transits to your Venus, but none of that is going to show. That data is missing from the picture. All I can see is the relationship of the current cosmic events to your sun sign.
And that’s what’s wrong with sun sign horoscopes.
For annual forecasts, or even for monthly, there’s plenty to be read and said anyway, plenty that will ring true and be helpful for steering your ship through the big picture presenting itself right now and for making use of available energies in harmony with the signs of the times. My 2009 sun sign forecasts for the year are available in a box in the right-hand column on this page. For periods shorter than monthly, with only sun signs for reference, astrological precision necessarily takes flight, although there are ways do weeklies or dailies in a helpful manner.
Did you ever wonder why one of today’s most popular weekly astrologers never really tells you anything about the stars? He just seems to select a theme and then kind of propounds philosophically upon it? And those daily horoscopes in newspapers, which are accurate about one-tenth of the time – what’s up with those?
Here’s the reality. (1) The astrologer has about one-tenth of the data he or she needs to read your daily horoscope – actually less than that, because even the degree of your sun is missing. (2) Even on a weekly basis, the only portion of the big picture that’s changing quickly enough to have discernable effects on your sun sign is the moon, which changes signs every two to three days.
An astrologer for whom accuracy matters who is trying to read such a small span of time with only sun sign data can only really focus on the big themes visible in the longer-term charting. Then she can make note of any planetary shifting that does happen to be occurring that day or week and try to advise you in little day-to-day ways of how to continue making progress on the long-term themes affecting those born in your sun sign. That will be the best you can expect, regardless of the skill of the astrologer, and that’s the truth.
Having shared that information as background, I would like to know how frequently you would like to see your sun sign horoscope. You can vote in the poll using the widget below and/or add a comment in the comment section and/or send me an email at AstrologyExaminer@gmail.com. Once I’ve got a sense for what you’d like, I’ll do my best to help.
