The signs of late autumn and winter fill out the final slots on our astrological Secret Santa list, as our shopping days tick down toward the winter solstice, Dec. 21. The longest night is followed quickly by the Christian celebration of the birth of the Light of the World, and the cycle of the natural world in the northern hemisphere will again shift toward the sun. When stuffing stockings for relatives and friends born under these signs, remember their birthdays are coming up as well!
Sagittarius (November 23-December 21): It’s been a bit of a hard year for the wise but playful Archers among us. Their ruling planet, Jupiter, has been holed up in Capricorn, where he is weakest and most tested. They need something that expresses that thought from John Lennon’s Mind Games: “Faith in the future, out of the now.” If your sage Sagi friend is religious or scholarly, which many are, check out this year’s selection of books on religion’s changing roles in society and politics. Fascinating stuff! If not religious, perhaps a philosophical book on our changing world would be in order. You could also choose something to get them out to play, from jogging clothes to Tai Chi lessons or even a snowmobile. Outdoor recreation and indoor parties and performances are rejuvenating for the Sagittarian soul, who loves physical activity as much as mental contemplation and adores being in the thick of it all and among other people.
Capricorn (December 22-January 20): These determined folk made good progress through hard work this year. While Jupiter’s placement was rough on Archers, it was good for the Mountain Goats. They’ve got their eyes on continuing that progress next year in new ways. Give them tools to support expansion in their careers – or whichever area of life they’re focused on – and help them stay organized. Have you ever gone Christmas shopping in an office-supplies store? How about an antiques store? Either one would be a good idea if you have a Capricorn on the list. In the first, you might find a leather-bound datebook or a handsome PDA handheld computer; in the second, perhaps an antique glass-front bookcase, an antique vase, or as Pooh-bear would say, “a handy jar to put things in.” Capricorns tend to hang onto things, and they like to keep them sorted for later re-use. If their expansion means more travel, they might need a new bag or two.
Aquarius (January 21-February 19): Get Aquarians something electric, preferably wireless and portable, and maybe even solar-powered. Did you know there are now solar-powered portable music players? There are even some new pricey bags for toting your notebook computer that have built-in solar generators to charge your laptop and cell phone. Now that’s cutting-edge Aquarian. Water Bearers are the arbiters of popular culture. They’re individualistic, with interests scattered all through the atmosphere and ozone, but they like to be aware of the latest sensations in any field of culture, and they definitely help steer society toward what’s cool. If your Aquarian friend is more of a reader than a computer geek, look at what’s just breaking into the New York Times best-seller list. If he’s a music or movie junkie, check out what’s just breaking into the charts or coming out on video. A volume of sarcastic humor won’t go wrong either.
Pisces (February 20-March 20): This is the sign for whom your gifts can be as sentimental and sincere as the season. Whatever you give them, give it with love. Even a knickknack will do if it evokes a heartwarming truth. The more your gift caters to the imagination and fills the senses, the better. Pampering colognes and body lotions, soft sweaters and slippers, books of poetry and objets d’art are all welcome, as are subscriptions to journals of poetry and art or periodicals with spiritual or universal themes. Season tickets to the symphony or ballet would be great, as would a membership at a health club with a nice big pool. Let the fishes immerse themselves in the depths of something beautiful. Imaginative novelties like interactive globes offering a glimpse into the world’s cultures, or illuminated globes that switch from showing a geographical view of earth to an astronomical view of the constellations at night also capture the Pisces imagination.
The gift guide for Aries, Taurus, Gemini and Cancer is here, and the one for Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio is here. Enjoy this season of giving!
