Emilio Pucci's Fall 2009 collection

With a little chill in the wind, we know that winter is coming, so now is the time to bundle up. When we’re home, we can just put layer upon layer to keep us warm, but when you go out to work, shop or take care of errands; you probably want to look a little more put together. Specifically for winter clothes that you would like to last a long time, coats are something that I suggest you splurge on for good quality.

Quilted coats – Quilted coats are in style right now because of the very chilly weather that’s predicted to come this winter. Many of the quilted coats are very durable and more lightweight than other coats. Quilted ones can afford to be thinner and still provide you with adequate warmth. This is a coat I would recommend buying. They sell quilted coats at many major department stores for fair prices, but make sure that you try it on to get the fit that you want. Some types of quilting may be too big and heavy on you.

Fur coats – Whether you’re into real fur or faux fur, always remember that if you plan on investing in a fur coat it had better be a good one. Nothing is more depressing than seeing a gorgeous fur coat and finding out that the touch is gritty and cheap. Fur is meant to be luxurious, so I suggest this as something you may have to splurge just a little more on. I’m not saying go out and buy a $3,000 Burberry coat, but maybe don’t shop at a bargain bin to find what you’re looking for.

Chunky knits – If you’re not fully committed to this trend, take it halfway there and buy a chunky knit scarf and wrap it around the neck to make the knit look fuller. If you chose, you can just acccessorize with a knit instead of making it your entire outfit. If you’re thinking of buying a chunky sweater, or dress, try it on. Knits look very different on the hanger versus on the body, and occasionally they don’t fall in the right place. Quality knits are hard to find as well, but don’t go to cheaper places to find them. Knits shouldn’t just look warm, they should feel warm and of good quality.

Over the knee/thigh high boots – When I think of thigh high boots, I automatically think of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. Although she played a prostitute, if you dress these boots properly, they can look incredibly stylish and edgy. Personally one of the simplest ways to avoid the hooker-look is to simply wear opaque tights underneath. That sliver of skin between your hem and the top of your boots should be covered. The ways to wear these, you can experiment with mini dresses, super skinny jeans or flowing skirts.

Always keep in mind that trends are supposed to be statements, so try not to mix too many statements into one outfit. Too many trends, and it will look confusing, but too little and it won't look bold. Try on outfits to figure out what looks best, and with big ticket items like fur coats or thigh high boots, if you're not sure if you should mix other things, just rememeber less is more.
