I try not to be one of those travelers who leaves home with their entire wardrobe in their suitcase, but sometimes despite my best planning, I just don’t have a clue what I want to wear on a trip. My biggest issue tends to be with accessories. I stuff my jewelry organizer with way more rings, necklaces, bracelets and the like than I would ever need. But now? Problem solved.
The Leakey Collection is a company courtesy of Kenya-based couple Katy and Phillip Leakey, which houses – amongst other products – Zulugrass Jewelry. It’s a collection of all natural, hand-made strands of grass beads blended with Japanese and Czech glass beads, strung together on a special elastic that was created for use in the movie Spiderman. You can wear a strand alone, combine them to create long, ropey necklaces or shorter chokers, bracelets, or whatever else you can come up with. It’s like DIY accessories, and you can have a different look every day as long as you have your creative wits about you.
On a recent trip, all I took with me was a multi-strand necklace that could be worn either long or choker-length, a matching bracelet, and three single-strand necklaces. With just those five pieces, I was able to navigate a week’s worth of wardrobe choices and come up with a different look each day. I was worried the elastic might bunch and tangle in my hair when I wore the single strands as a ponytail, but I had no problem whatsoever. But what I had was just the tip of the iceberg. Check out the Zulugrass website, and you’ll see there are hundreds of inventive color and usage combinations.
But above and beyond the opportunity to look stylish, not only is Zulugrass jewelry eco-friendly, but it helps employ hundreds of Kenyan women working to help support their families. Buy jewelry, help two awesome causes. Not bad, huh?
