Detroit gang squad officers took down a drug courier last week, seizing 50 grams of heroin worth about $60,000. It is being hailed as a significant bust that could shut down a gang-operated source of narcotics trafficking.
Officers were conducting surveillance of a house at Greenfield and Grand River, occupied by known gang members and suspected of being an outlet for the distribution of drugs. Along came the suspect, driving a truck used for childrens' activities, face painting, cotton candy and the like, that would cater to events for kids.
"He went to a location that we know that [sic] is operated by known gang members, and we know that they sell large quantities of heroin and cocaine to other gang members," said Inspector Darryl Brown. "So that's what alerted my officers' attention."
After emerging from the gang house, the suspect's vehicle was pulled over, and the heroin was found inside the truck. The suspect was arrested and awaits arraignment on felony drug charges.
