This is the third and last installment of a series in recognition of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, this one highlighting an energetic non-profit group called Looking for My Sister (LFMS). The group's mission is to work toward prevention and cessation of domestic violence through education, outreach and intervention. It's method is to provide DV survivors with short and long term solutions, and its services encompass all of Wayne County.
LFMS offers a wide variety of tools for the survivor to use at any stage of her recovery from initial crisis through total independence. Crisis intervention may include advocacy, counseling and emergency referrals, as well as transitional housing and support groups. LFMS also offers workshops on health and career building, including financial and computer literacy.
Founded by Laurie Moore, herself a domestic violence survivor, LFMS wants to give every survivor a shot at raising a healthy family in secure, permanent housing, and to feel safe, active and self-sufficient.
LFMS is located at 19161 Schaefer Hwy, though snail mail should be directed to P.O. Box 37129, Oak Park, MI 48237. It may be reached by phone at (313) 861-3221, or by e-mail, info@lookingformysister.org. The group also has an informative website at www.lookingformysister.org.
This well-conceived non-profit is fueled by volunteerism and donations as well as the spirit of its people, so if you can lend a hand, give them a call.
