While different jurisdictional agencies learn to get along, the bears in Mammoth continue to suffer.
The last time bear issues were reported at this site, the fate of a burglarizing bear, dubbed "Blondie" by the community, was in limbo. The evening that the Town Council was suppose to decide whether or not that bear would be destroyed, the death of three other bears came to light. A sow and her two cubs had been destroyed several days earlier by the Department of Fish and Game, but the community had not been notified.
Since bear issues loom large in Mammoth, the community was extremely upset that nothing had been said, even though DFG is not required to report such items. Since then, "Blondie" has not been seen and some wonder whether it's because she left the area, or because she too has been destroyed.
The scenario grows worse, as just yesterday, a visitor to the Mammoth area, shot a bear in the head because it was eating his snacks. Investigations are in progress to determine whether or not the man's allegations that he acted in self defense are true. If they are not true, he would be faced with hefty fines at a minimum.

A bear discussion has been placed on the Oct. 7 Town Council agenda so that the community can air their concerns about all of these situations.
