As the snow continued to fall today I got word that two Mammoth locals had won prestigious awards in the field of travel journalism. Writer David Page took home a bronze award for his guidebook Yosemite and the Southern Sierra: A Complete Guide and photographer Christian Pondella won a silver award for his ice climbing shot in National Geographic Adventure.
The national awards were given out by the Society of American Travel Writers, which sponsors the annual Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Competition. According to SATW's website the awards reflect, "the premier competition in this field, like the Pulitzer Prizes for travel journalism."
"I'm not sure they give bronze Pulitzers, but hey, I must say that my fleeting disappointment at not winning the gold was eased considerably--and then quickly replaced with an overwhelming sense of unworthiness--by the fact that the likes of Rolf Potts and Sebastian Junger had also, this year and last (respectively), been relegated to third place," Page said of his recognition.
