Major New York events venue and beloved tourist destination, Tavern on the Green is set to close later this year. After the LeRoy family’s 25 year lease came up for renewal and was declined by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation in August 2009, the key to the 27,000 sq. ft. facility was up for grabs.
Dean J. Poll, of Central Park Boat House, has since been awarded the lease and is set to assume operation of the space starting in 2010. Poll’s proposal calls for a major renovation including the addition of an outdoor café and a new landscape design. As for the furnishings and twinkly lights that made Tavern on the Green such a magical location, they’ll be moving out along with the Leroy family by January 1st. There’s still no word on whether or not the name “Tavern on the Green” will remain with the venue, as it is a trademark of the Leroy Family. There’s also no word on if the restaurant’s new décor will continue to be the ideal back drop for bridal showers, proms, birthday celebrations, corporate events, and wedding receptions as the current over the top furnishings have done for over two decades.
