Rendering of the Oscar Stage ( Rockwell Group-AP)

While most of us will never have to put together an event anywhere as grand as the Academy Awards, you can certainly use such a phenomenally over the top production as inspiration for your next at home entertaining endeavor.

Here are a few simple ways to translate the grandeur of the Oscars into a special night for your guests:

Know the dress code
Make sure guests are clear on what they should be wearing. Everyone going to the Oscars knows it’s a night to dress to impress. Be sure to include this on your invitation.

Make a grand entrance
You might not have a red carpet, but the night should start as soon as guests arrive. So, spruce of the yard and put out a fresh welcome mat. Make sure your entry way is inviting and there is somewhere for guest to hang their coats, umbrella, or anything else they may have brought with them.

Treat your guests like VIPs
As if stars didn’t already have it made, the Oscars are just another time for them to be pampered. From a day of primping to custom made clothing, posing on the red carpet, ridiculous swag bags, and all night parties. Make your guests feel just as special! Greet everyone at the door. Take lots of pictures and put up your own post party “paparazzi website”. Send guests home with homemade swag bags so the special night doesn’t have to end when your party does.

Let lighting set the mood
I’m sure you all noticed how the lights on the crystals surrounding the stage changed with every scene. While you probably won’t be changing the color of your lights between dinner and dessert, experimenting with colored light bulbs in your sconces, and table and floor lamps can take your décor to another level and are much softer than traditional white bulbs.

Make some noise
Whether it’s a dazzling music number featuring Beyonce or cutting someone off after a long acceptance speech, music plays a huge role in the flow of the awards show. Don’t let your event fall flat. Your music can also set the tone. The right song can signal that it’s time to settle down for dinner or to hit the dance floor. Take a little time before the event to put together the perfect playlist or look into getting so live entertainment.

Short and sweet
No one likes to be stuck listening to long drawn out acceptance speeches. Each awardee had 45 seconds to thank God and their mom before the music signaled it was time for them to hit the road. Follow suit at your next soiree. The right toast can certainly make the night more memorable, but don’t go into full on speech mode. Especially not when there’s still more eating and drinking to be done.
