This year, celebrate a green family Thanksgiving. We are heading into a wonderful time of year when we celebrate our thankfulness for our bountiful blessings provided to us by the foresight of our founding fathers. Christmas is just around the corner, when we celebrate the arrival of the Messiah. We follow that with a celebration of a new year as we head into the 235th year of America the beautiful and the bountiful.  We are indeed a blessed people. We should all feel humbled and appreciative of the legacy handed over to us and placed in our guardianship. We are expected to handle it well, and pass it on in better shape than when it arrived to us. We can do that with some careful consideration, and responsible actions. We can begin with a "green" Thanksgiving.

Many folks enjoy decorating for the Thanksgiving holiday. This is an easy exercise in "green" as so many fruits and vegetables make wonderful decorations. We start with the faithful pumpkin and gourds which can be arranged in many different ways to decorate both inside and outside the home. Kids should learn, as we did, to appreciate their heritage, and should be actively engaged in preparing the Thanksgiving festivities. Ocean Spray has wonderful ideas on how to celebrate holidays with the family. Cranberries, like pumpkins, and apple cider, are featured at Thanksgiving. Ocean Spray offers many tips and recipes on how to include the family as you prepare for the feast.

Now to get started. Rounding up fresh wholesome produce can be achieved in the Tampa Bay area. There are 18 farmers markets ,  over 94 fruit and vegetable markets, and 8 natural foods locations to shop. No matter where you live, there is a local market to serve your needs. Why not get the kids aside, talk about how to decorate the home, and plan an excursion to one of these markets as a family.  At the time you are picking out decorations, you can begin considering the fresh vegetables you will want to add to the Thanksgiving dinner menu. This will save time and assure these are available when you need them in November. Some of the nicest centerpieces can start with a simple idea and build around it.  A plant, or plant basket, works well as a starting point, and the family can have fun creating just the right look. Adding small gourds, colored corn, apples, nuts, and some fall greenery around the base will complete the look of this attractive centerpiece.  Even though we live in Tampa, you can creatively use palm fronds and leafs to create interesting looks. Dried branches, interesting stones or shells,  and wild flowers can add a nice touch, as you give your Fall arrangements a "southern" feel. Creative lighting can add to the effect you wish to create. The new soy candles are environmentally friendly and Carillon Candles helps create a Florida Thanksgiving with scents like Jasmine, Mango Papaya,Cool Citrus Basil, and Florida Blossom.

If you wish to carry off your green Thanksgiving with an organic turkey, Organic Prairie Farms  has 13 - 16 pound organically grown turkeys at $3.97 lb. Add organically grown produce and you are really making a statement about your commitment to creating a cleaner, healthier Florida. Visiting stores like Fresh Market and Whole Foods will help you select natural ingredients to add to your favorite recipes. You are now well on your way to celebrating a green family Thanksgiving.

Decorating Ideas
Take a basket, candle or charger and turn it into a creative centerpiece. Place gourds, colored corn, cranberries, grapes, nuts around the base to tie the Thanksgiving look together.
