October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and all over the country, individuals, businesses, and organizations are doing their part to help victims of domestic violence.  Allstate is no exception. 

Allstate has created a campaign called Gal P.A.L., or Pass it on, Act on it, and Learn, encouraging people to talk about domestic violence.  There a couple of different ways to get involved. 

Donate a suit:  Until October 9, you can drop off a new of gently used womens suit at participating Allstate locations, and they will in turn donate it to the local womens shelter.  Usually when fleeing a violent situation, the last thing on a persons mind is how they will reenter the business world to seek employment later on, and being properly attired helps them look professional as well as builds confidence.  In Anchorage, drop of sites for donations are, the office of Diane Johnson,4045 Lake Otis Parkway, Anchorage AK, or the office of Pat Blakney, at 3555 Arctic Blvd, Anchorage AK.

Share a story:  If you or somebody you love have been involved in a domestic violence situation, visit www.clicktoempower.org  and share your story.  Clicktoempower.org is a place for survivors to share and support one another by telling the story of how domestic violence changed our lives.  You get 3000 words to tell your tale, and I must confess when I wrote mine it came tumbling out quite abruptly, and I found it difficult to squeeze in to 3000 words.  Sharing your experiences however is definitely beneficial to healing, and I would encourage anybody with a story of domestic violence, be you man or woman, to give it a shot.  Survivors who share a story will also have the chance to win a Gal P.A.L. T shirt like the one Mira Sorvino wears on the website. 

So way to go Allstate for taking the time to make Domestic Violence Awareness Month a priority and encouraging us to talk about it instead of hide from it.  Hopefully, soon there will come a time when we will all do this all the time, not just during the month of October.
