If you are like me you woke up Friday morning and prayed you just had a nightmare.  But it’s real, our beloved icon is gone. Over the past 30 years Michael Jackson’s music has never went out of rotation for most of us. As Detroiters we should take great pride in, and be honored to boast that our sound, our soul, our city helped shape Michael into the legend that he was to become.

What is it about MJ that captured hearts from 1 to 100? As soon as I heard the news, in an effort to just react and respond, I changed my Facebook status to “My heart is full of sorrow no words could ever express how Michael’s art and genius shaped and changed my life.” Michael did change my life as he did many others. To give the world such great music and entertainment that stirs the soul and moves you bring out the best in yourself is a great talent and a gift. I am thankful that he shared his gift with us in the biggest way possible.

When I was 6 my father took me to the 'Victory Tour' at the Silverdome. When I was 10 my he took me to the 'Bad Tour' at the Palace. I am fortunate to be a part of that generation that was able to take part in the only 2 tours Michael had in the past 30 years in the United States. I am also fortunate to have had parents that realized that importance his art and talent could have on my life and made sure I was at both events. My dad even got us a limo to ride to the Palace for the Bad Tour! I went to the shows, had all the albums (on vinyl for the house and cassette for the car,) I had the socks and glove, the purses and buttons, the posters and videos, I even had the tourbooks and of course I had the doll.

With the influx of coverage and comments I just wanted to throw my own in there. Michael was such an inspiration to all artists and especially musicians across the world his dedication and perfection really set the standard for all creative people to strive towards. He used his entire life to give the world the best of him. Although he passed at 50 Michael Jackson gave us 45 years of music I would say his destiny was very much fulfilled. There is no doubt Michael Jackson’s music, dancing and genius will continue to inspire generations to come.

That was my ode to Michael... What's yours?
