Dilla Day is Tuesday February 10!
The 10
th of February marks one of the most somber yet joyous days in hip-hop history, it’s the day we lost our beloved friend, artist, and super-producer James “
Jay Dee/ J Dilla” Yancey. Since 2006 the hip-hop community has used Feb 10 to celebrate the life and legacy of James Yancey and you can bet there will be a tribute going on in almost every major city across the nation and even some abroad. Next Tuesday in Detroit the party will start at
People’s Records for the
King James listening party, then move on to hot spot
TV Bar for a J Dilla benefit tribute. All proceeds and donations from the benefit will go directly to Dilla’s mother (
Ma Dukes) and the Yancey family.
To start the evening off
DJ HouseShoes will be hosting an intimate listening party for his latest release
King James an album honoring the legacy of J Dilla. Later into the night
KFresh of
RenSoul brings us a special edition of his weekly ‘Stoopid Fresh’ party. KFresh will host a tribute to J Dilla featuring DJ Dez, DJ Sicari, and of course DJ HouseShoes on the 1s & 2s. The night will also be donned by live performances from the usual suspects, Slum Village, Guilty Simpson, Big Tone, Phat Kat and more of Detroit’s hip-hop royalty at their finest.
The fight for Dilla’s rights, and obtaining posthumous reparations, has been an ongoing struggle between The Yancey family and the executors of Dilla’s estate for years.
The Battle for J Dilla’s Legacy has been a highly publicized and seemingly uphill battle, although it has on the flip side brought friends and fans around the world together to support the Yancey family at every given opportunity. DJ HouseShoes longtime friend of Dilla and the Yancey family, and active advocate of Ma Dukes, will be hosting and making appearances throughout the month at several Dilla benefit and tribute events.
On a personal note: I came to the conclusion along time ago that I am a Dillaholic. When a substance or thought gives you physical symptoms and you feel like you actually need it to alter your state of being, you're hooked. When I hear Dilla joints I actually close my eyes, inhale, and exhale the breath of LIFE. I need it, crave it, gotta have it, couldn't imagine my life without it. It renews me, restores my faith in the world, hypes me up, and relaxes me at the same time... who needs drugs?!?! I think I’m going to be 68 yrs old and "
Raise it Up" will come on (the oldies but goodies station) and I will lose my mind!!! They’re going to look at me like "wtf is wrong wit Granma?" lol and that’s ok!
See ya Tuesday :-)
