If you were in Detroit last weekend and you are a hip-hop soul lover, like me, then you are probably still recovering from the “5 Ela…Will Be Televised” release party. Friday night 5 ELA and friends took over the Elements Gallery in Detroit’s Corktown and captivated a packed house until the music stopped the next morning.
The release party, in honor of 5 ELA MCs Mudd and Thyme, was the place to be and the talk of the town. The highly anticipated “…Will be Televised” mixtape CD was the product of 5 ELA re-forming their group for the new millennium with friends and artists that rocked with them during the 90s at the legendary Detroit Hip Hop Shop, along with a few rising artists. Ta’Raach hosted the evening and DJ Sicari provided the sounds, performances included Big Tone, Danny Brown, Rio Data, Finale, Octane and Illite, and of course 5 ELA.
5 ELA is back in full effect, bringing that raw Detroit flavor with classic Hip Hop Shop vibes and new "Michigan Avenue" sounds with their first album in 9 years. "...Will be Televised," features 9th Wonder, Nick Speed, and Big Tone behind the beats, and guest appearances from Finale, Baatin of Slum Village, and newcomer MC Marcellus. After a decade-long hiatus, and the loss of MC, Proof, and producer J Dilla, 5 ELA warns there is a 2nd wave of Detroit hip-hop about to storm the planet, and they did they did a very good job of proving it Friday night.
If you missed the party, do not make the mistake of missing out on this classic mixtape CD full of Detroit’s hip-hop history, present, and future.
