Hurricane Ike’s destruction of the New Albany Amphitheater may be the best thing that came out of last September’s storm. The reconstruction of the amphitheater has inspired an influx of musicians and culture along New Albany’s riverfront and downtown area. Every Friday local musicians can be seen for free on the New Albany riverfront. This coupled with new restaurants popping up in the downtown area have brought new life and culture to an otherwise mundane town.
On Saturday August 22nd the city will host “Celts on the River” also known as the Kentuckiana Celtic Fest. This will be an all day concert featuring six performers from 3 pm until 11 pm and will be totally free including parking. The event has attracted Ireland’s own Brendan Loughrey as the headliner, an Irish musician now based out of Chicago. The event will also feature five local artists: Men of Thunda, The Derby Boys, Cloigheann Keltricity, Guilderoy Byrne, and Liam’s Fancy. Concert-goers are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs and be prepared to dance. No pets, outside food, alcoholic beverages, or coolers will be permitted at the riverfront.
The arrival of such events to the New Albany riverfront indicates growth in both the economy and culture of the New Albany city township. This event should attract tourists and New Albany residents alike and could bring business to many of the local restaurants that have recently appeared in downtown New Albany. Among the new restaurants are Jackson’s Seafood on Main St., The New Albany Brewing Company restaurant on Bank St., The River City Winery on Pearl St., and Studio’s also on Main St. all within walking distance of the riverfront. The Examiner will have full coverage of the event.
