Penthouse Magazine marks its 40th anniversary of publication in the U.S. this month with its next issue, a double issue available on stands July 21.
Sexy History buffs will note that the magazine was actually founded by Bob Guccione in the U.K. in 1965, meaning it will also get to celebrate its 45th anniversary if it can make it to next year (it's been a tough year for print mags, even sexy ones, and it's been a tough decade for Penthouse), but '69 is still a nice round number for the men's mag:
Check out the slideshow below for a look at Penthouse, circa 1969: The first American edition, published in September 1969, featured Pet of the Month Evelyn Treacher, a British model and former flight attendant (and Previous Penthouse UK Pet of the Year winner) who went on to become America's first Pet of the Year in 1970. Treacher was photographed by Phillip O. Stearns for the cover and pictorial.
Guccione himself photographed the next American Edition cover girl: October 1969 Pet of the Month Kelly McQueen. Amnon Bar-Tur photographed November Pet of the Month Ulla Lindstrom, and Guccione shot December 1969 Pet of the Month Janet Pearce.
At least one of the shots of Tenaya, Summer 2009 Pet of the Month, from the issue currently on stands, appears to be a nod to the Evelyn Treacher pictorial.
My slideshow is as SFW as I could make it. For more vintage Penthouse circa 1969 and beyond (NSFW, but, you know, vintage and artsy and kinda awesome), check out this blog. And don't miss PenthouseMagazine.com for the latest.
At any rate, happy 40th, Penthouse!
