If you're a Travel Channel addict like I am, you will love this iPhone app. It uses your current location to determine what attractions are around you, but with a Travel Channel spin to it. What I love about this app (besides that it's free!) is that it shows you places around you that Travel Channel folks like Anthony Bourdain (No Reservations), Andrew Zimmern (Bizarre Foods), Samantha Brown, and Adam Richman (Man v. Food) have visited and reviewed. No more scrambling in the middle of the show to write down the name of a place that one of them visited, or thinking that you knew where it was but after driving around for an hour, realized you remembered wrong. For example, this handy app will show you that Adam Richman and Anthony Bourdain both visited Voodoo Doughnuts in Portland, Oregon, link you to their stories, give you how far it is from where you currently are, and a map on how to get there from your position at the moment.
And it's not just about where to eat or visit according to featured shows on the Travel Channel. You have information from the internet, local experts and travelers like yourself who submit their own reviews of local attractions and establishments, like shopping, museums and churches. Also there are video guides for cities like Las Vegas and New Orleans that give you all sorts of great insider information.
A couple of good-to-knows:
- Since the app uses your current location by GPS, use the search box if you are looking for places in a location you're planning to visit or are en route to.
- TravelGo only provides information for U.S. locations.
