Get ready, Charlotte...the biggest night in local music is just three weeks away from rolling out the "Red Carpet"!
The Booth Playhouse located in uptown Charlotte's Blumenthal Performing Arts Center will serve as the host facility for the 3rd Annual Red Carpet Awards Show presented by the Charlotte Music Awards. The Charlotte Music Awards (CMA) was co-founded by entertainment mogul Jeffrey Cheen and media/promotional guru Michael D. Evans. The organization was created to recognize musical talent throughout the Carolinas. The genre of music covers every facet from Folk to Rap, Roots music to Heavy Metal Rock-n-Roll...and everything in between. Throughout the calendar year various genre specific events, called "Showcases", are held within the Metro Charlotte area. These events determine categorical winners. At year's end the award winners from each genre are presented their Charlotte Music Award recognition in a gala event which includes performances by the winners, appearances by local celebrities and special guests. The CMA is set up in such a manner as not to leave any facet of the local music scene unaccounted. In addition to its founders, there is a Board and Advisory Council consisting of local representatives from the community. Currently serving on the Board are Nancy Carter (Charlotte City Council District #5 Representative) and Shirley Fulton (Former Superior Court Judge and current president of the Charlotte Jazz Society). The Advisory Council is made up of a cross-section of participants in the local music community. Their duties consists of planning and governance of the Charlotte Music Awards as well as the decision-making process concerning award recipients. Some names of local recognition serving are Larry Sprinkle (long time local radio/television personality), Roger Cullis (Cullis Entertainment) and Duncan Hines (publisher for "The Carolina Promoter").
Cheen has spent more than four decades in the music industry performing promotional, management and record executive functions. Over the years, his list of clients has included Joan Rivers, Deep Purple, Ronnie Laws and Rick James. At one point in his career he partnered with the owner of the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Forum, Jerry Buss, in presenting concerts and television productions. He is also noted for producing all of the acts at the Tropicana Night Club in Atlantic City for a three year run. He was instrumental in bringing a serious light on entertainment in the Asian market by producing the Pacific Rim Festival in Los Angeles. Cheen also served internationally with the Chinese and Australian governments in their work in growing the music industry. He currently serves on the board of the L.A. Music Awards and the Hollywood Fame Awards. He divides his time between Los Angeles and Charlotte.
Evans, who has spent more than thirty years in the communication field, seemed like a natural fit for this partnership with Cheen. During his career he has done everything from writing and editing to public relations. His love of music always came to the surface of whatever he may have been involved with at the moment. The 1980s saw Evans with Broken English Productions dabbling with management and booking. Currently, his promotional company, High Timberline Media, demands most of his attention. He also works as a film reviewer as part of the "Venus & Mars" duo and as a columnist for "Uptown Magazine" and "CityPolitical" magazine. He participated in the founding of Charlotte's "The First Amendment" and "Mandrake"-both are alternative publications.
The evening will be filled with diverse entertainment from fourteen acts. Some of the artists scheduled to appear are Jeff Luckadoo (Country), The Donna Duncan Blues Band (Blues), Lyra Shines (Rock), The Jones Brothers Gospel Quartet (Gospel) and Ida Devine (Hip-Hop/Urban). In addition to the performers, other well-known personalities will be in attendance.
