The term "dog days" of summer might be somewhat of a joke, but the long hot days ahead are nothing to laugh about. In the heat of the day, people aren't the only ones who can suffer from boredom. Pets do to! Less interaction, less time outside, and less exercise can spell trouble for a dog that can easily become bored. This is why it's important to offer new stimulation perfect for this time of year to perk up his interest and keep him occupied while the temperature sizzles.

Freezer Fare Try this simple trick. Take an ice cube tray and drop one or two pieces of kibble in each one, then fill with water and freeze. The treat "cubes" are a refreshing treat that has to melt down to the tasty tidbit. Dog treats work to! Or, try soaking a rope toy in water and then freezing it before giving it to your dog.

Water Works Child-size plastic pools can be purchased for as little as $8 each. Your dog will love wading in to take a dip during the day. Even playing in the sprinklers can be a fun way for both of you to get some exercise.

Try the Treadmill Always wanted to teach your dog to walk/run on a treadmill? This might be the time to do it. Treadmills can be an easy way to take the dog for a walk when it's just too hot to go out.

The Joys of Sand Sandboxes aren't just for the kids. Dogs that dig love a sandbox filled with buried "treasure" of bones and toys. Finding them all offers hours of endless enjoyment.

With just a little creativity your dog can avoid suffering from boredom. And the two of you can spend time together enjoying new activities.
