If you live in Minnesota, you may have a bundle of money waiting for you right now, whether you know it or not.
The state of Minnesota has some $300 million that it wants to give away to its citizens. The trouble is, it can't find who the money belongs to.
This is not a myth or urban legend. It's true. Check with the Minnesota Department of Commerce. Do a search on "unclaimed property" in Minnesota, and you'll find a place where you can search on your name to see if you have any money waiting for you.
But how is it possible that the state has so much money without knowing who it belongs to? Well, money gets lost for all kinds of reasons.
The Minnesota Department of Commerce web site explains it this way:
"Every day, someone loses some form of financial property because of a change of address, death, or just plain forgetfulness. What happens to these forgotten funds? The Unclaimed Property Division is responsible for holding the abandoned or unclaimed funds or property until the rightful owner or heir is found. There is a one in 20 chance that you may have $100 or more coming to you from the state's unclaimed property fund and not know it."
It takes just a few seconds to type in your own name to see if you're lucky today. Who knows -- you might have a couple hundred bucks waiting for you -- or maybe a couple of million.
If you are one of those people who is owed a bundle, well, you can thank me later.
