As more of us opt to stay home for the summer, an "inner ocean" cruise could be a great vacation alternative. Consider the Lake Michigan Getaway, featuing 3 states, offered by the Great Lakes Cruising Company. It is a leisurely, 6 night itinerary on the an elegant 100 passenger cruise ship, which begins its journey at Chicago's Navy Pier. Next is Manistee, a picturesque village that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. No Lake Michigan cruise would be complete without a stop at the exquisite Mackinac Island, in the straits of Mackinac, where lilacs herald the summer and he mode of transportation is horse drawn buggy.
The cruise then continues down the western shore, offering optional tours of Door County, Wisconsin, filled with the very essence of summer: sand dunes, lighthouses and orchards. Then it on to Milwaukee, the "Deutsch Athens" of southeastern Wisconsin, for beer and bratwurst, and finally back to Chicago.
The tour is offered all summer but, between July 1 to July 15, the price is at a 20 % discount. It is among the best priced cruises,at $1,725 per person, considering it includes includes meals, snacks, soft drinks and set-ups.
