Everyone does it. We blurt out the very thought we wanted to keep private.
It can be hilarious--like John Candy in Uncle Buck. He stared at a wart on a woman's face for the longest time and tried to hold it back. But finally he inadvertently called her "Melanoma Head."
It was indeed hilarious in the movie, but it's not always so funny in real life.
Why do say out the very thing we are desperately trying to keep bottled up? The July 3 issue of Science says that "the very act of trying to avoid saying or doing something can sometimes cause it to happen."
Thinking that we don't want to say something is the very thing that brings it to our minds' attention--and there it goes, out of the mouth. We are always shocked by our gaffe, but whether it's a foul word, sexist comment, or just a stupid, stupid joke, we better be prepared to apologize.
