Sore loser? Sore winner? It's all the same to me

I once played Monopoly with a guy who threw the board across the table when he lost. He was the poster child for sore losers.

Games are fun for most of us--whether playing competitive poker or Go Fish. The downside is that if there's a winner, there has to be a loser.

I firmly believe you can tell a lot about a person by the way he or she loses. We're very competitive in our family, but the majority of us are good losers.

What do I mean by a good loser? Someone who says, "Nice game," and means it.

A bad loser runs the gamut from someone who makes excuses for everything that went wrong to someone who gets mad and throws a Monopoly board.

Right beside the sore loser stands the sore winner, gloating and rubbing it in. Both are pains in the rear.

As for me, I'm one of the most competitive people around, but I don't mind losing. I'd rather win, but for me the joy is in the trying.

How do you handle a loss? Does it matter if it's a friendly golf game or a national tournament? Does it change things if there's money on the line?

Let me know. The conversation continues with you.

Just take it one gigantic, earth-shattering crisis at a time.
