Twelve people are dead, but the alleged gunman Major Nadal Hasan is alive, after a mass shooting at the Fort Hood Texas Army Base. Thirty one are wounded, some seriously. Two other alleged gunmen are being held. The Army post is currently CLOSED.

What makes an Army officer decide to shoot his comrades? (One of the dead is a civilian police officer who was working as a contractor on the base.)

There are a few things to note in this tragedy. The first is that Fort Hood Texas Army Base is the home of the Warrior Combat Stress Reset Program, a program to assist with the stress of battle that can lead to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Reports have come out that the shooter at the Ft. Hood, Texas base massacre's name is Major Malik Nadal Hasan.

The Huffington Post wonders if the Ft. Hood Texas Army Base shooter, Hasan,
was his given name or if he converted to Islam. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/11/05/malik-nadal-hasan-fort-ho_n_347620.html That same article says that the Major was a psychologist or psychiatrist on the post, and that was confirmed by all the major news sources.

The Ft. Hood Army Base mass shooter's name is going to be a huge topic of conversation on the news
and on blog comments for quite a while. And it doesn't matter what the truth is. What's going to be said are things that will stir the pot.

And what's sad is that the victims will remain victimized because some people will be concentrating on a man's religion or his name or his title or his skin color or his whatever it is. We need to be aware of who the shooters are, and try to figure out the "why" of it all. And there needs to be a speedy trial for whoever perpetrated the horror.

Those of us who caution patience will be called anti-American. But being American means that people go to trial for their crimes and a jury of their peers decides their guilt or non-guilt. So please, don't add vitriolic fuel to an already combustible situation.

More to come.

The conversation continues with you.

Just take it one gigantic, earth-shattering crisis at a time.
