Look back on a picture of Marilyn Monroe. She was a size 14 but certainly didn't look it. That's because today her clothes would be labeled a size 10 at the most.

Times change. And so do the labels inside our clothes.

They're called vanity sizes because as we become more obese as a society, the clothes-sellers want us to feel good enough about ourselves to buy their wares. The day the labels changed, someone could go inside the store a 16 and come out a 12, feeling pretty darn good about herself.

Perceptions of beauty have changed over time--from the voluptuous to the wispy--and fashion has changed with the perceptions.

Why can't we just face the music? As a society we are overweight and overfed.

Are we (especially women) so stupid that we don't know that the label means nothing? Or does it even matter? What do you think?

The conversation continues with you.

Just take it one gigantic, earth-shattering crisis at a time.
