Scientists have known about good body fat for a long time. It's called "brown fat" and it was thought that only babies had it. "Brown fat is stored mostly around the neck and under the collarbone. White fat tends to concentrate around the waistline, where it stores excess energy and releases chemicals that control metabolism and the use of insulin."

Now three different studies--from the US, Finland, and the Netherlands--found that some of this good fat stays in adults.

The secret is that it speeds up metabolism and might help people lose weight. Can everyone say "WOW" with me?

There are two possible ways this might be of use--and not just in my dreams. One way is to develop a pill that could somehow start the fat working.

Another way would be to figure out a way to develop more of the brown fat.

Either way, this news makes me smile. The conversation continues with you.

Just take it one gigantic, earth-shattering crisis at a time.
