Most of us are not surprised by this research. Published Monday in the Archives of General Psychiatry, the analysis of the data shows predictors of violent behavior, and claims that mental illness by itself is not a violence trigger. Eric Elbogen, of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, states that sometimes we try to explain violence with knee jerk reactions.
The study indicates the top 10 items that predict violent behavior.
As listed on MSNBC, they are:
1. Younger age
2. History of violence
3. Male gender
4. History of juuvenile detention
5. Divorce or separation in the past year
6. History of physical abuse
7. Parental criminal history
8. Unemployment in the past year
9. Severe mental illness with substance abuse
10. Being a crime victim in the past year
Of special note is that severe mental illness doesn't stand by itself, but is paired with substance abuse.
Do you see any surprises on the top 10 list?
