The Family Partnership was formed as part of the Special Health Care Needs (SHCN) program of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services to enhance the relationship between SHCN and the families they serve. The Family Partnership also provides support, information and networking opportunities to families of individuals with special health care needs and/or developmental disabilities.
The Family Partnership members include individuals, as well as parents, family members and legal guardians. The Partnership employs three professional Family Partners who share responsibility for each of SHCN's service areas. Each Family Partner is a parent of an individual with special needs and serves as a contact person for their designated areas. Area Partners also plan, schedule, and facilitate Family Partnership meetings. The next meeting, The Annual Parent and Caregiver Retreat, will be held December 4 – 5, 2009 at the Inn at the Grand Glaize, in Osage Beach, MO.
"The program is especially helpful for families living in rural areas of Missouri that might have limited opportunities to interact with other parents with children with similar types of special needs," explains Bev Woodhurst, Family Partner for St. Louis and Northern Missouri. She also noted that children with autism may have other medical issues, and the Family Partnership can assist in relaying information for those issues as well.
The Family Partnership is funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau Title V Block Grant and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services' Special Health Care Needs Program, and is achieved by means of an agreement with the Miller County Health Center. Family Partners can be reached by calling the area contacts or by calling the toll-free number 1-866-809-2400 ext. 308.
