As the fall festivities get underway, leading into winter parties and vacations, here are some ways to make heads turn, when you are on a budget.
If you wear athletic shoes, buy a new pair. A fresh pair of sneakers or sports shoes or even waterproof boots will get you a second look, as often that is the only thing people notice, especially on a crowded street where people are looking down and keeping their eyes averted.
Get a tan in winter. Everyone will think you went on an exotic vacation where you luxuriated to your heart’s content. Be sure to have some good stories to tell about your trip, even if it was just to the tanning salon. Do not get too much sun over too long a period of time, though, because you do not want to get skin cancers from such a mistake. Whatever you do, do not spend more than ½ hour at a time in direct sunlight. If you must spend a longer period of time in the sun, be sure to cover up and use sunscreen on exposed areas. Especially cover the top of your head with a hat. The scalp is very sensitive to sunlight.
If you like to read, find a book or magazine and carry it with you so you can read it while waiting anywhere. If this reading matter is in a different language from the one you grew up with, so much the better!
Travel light. Do not carry too many purses, bags, briefcases, backpacks, and the like, or, if you do, be sure not to fill them too full of belongings or supplies.
Carry a lucky coin. When you are about to put it in the parking meter, stop and ask yourself: Do I really want to spend my lucky coin? Then get back in your car and drive home and save the money and effort you would have expended.
Buy a pretty flower or potted plant and put it in the window of your home. If it looks alive, then so will you!
