Through the entire off season we were waiting for the New York Giants to pull the trigger on a trade for either Braylon Edwards, or Anquan Boldin. Why they were unable to get a trade like that completed is anyone’s guess, but the Giants headed into the 2009 draft needing a number one receiver.
This was also a team looking to build up his depth, not only at receiver but at Offensive tackle, where both starters were solid but a prospect was needed to back them up. This was also a team looking for depth at the LB position, even with the signing of free agent Michael Boley.
The Giants were one of those teams that had the luxury of having one definite need, a receiver worthy of the number one spot on their roster, the rest of their draft building up depth, or waiting for a steal to fall into their laps.
With the 29th pick in the first round, the Giants addressed their need at receiver by selecting Hakeem Nicks from North Carolina. Nicks has been compared to Boldin and Michael Irvin. He is a very physical receiver, and so far in his rookie year has played ok.
Nicks was the 7th ranked wide out in this draft, and the Giants made him the 5th one selected. Given that and the fact that he is third or fourth on the depth chart we must give this pick an initial grade of a B. The Giants really needed him to step up, and while that may be coming it hasn’t happened yet.
Thanks to the trade for Jeremy Shockey the Giants had the 45th pick in the second round. Here they addressed their need at Line Backer depth by taking OLB Clint Sintim of Virginia.
Lindy’s had Sintim ranked as the 4th best Inside LB in this draft. The main sticking point that while possessing a unique skill set, and being a four year starter Sintim was better suited to play in a 3-4 scheme. The Giants are betting that given the flexibility of their scheme and his pass rush specialty that he will make an impact for them. With that in mind this picks initial grade is a B.
With their own pick in the second round, 60th overall, the Giants selected OT William Beatty of UCONN. Beatty is an excellent tackle, but his play spiked his senior year. That has led many to question if he matured during that season, or started playing better to earn a big NFL contract. Given that fact, balanced against the fact that he is a suburb athlete we must give this pick an initial grade of B+.
With all that being said let us look at the initial grades of the New York Giants 2009 draft:
Round One- B
Round Two (45th overall) - B
