Infant and Children's TYLENOL recalled after bacteria found

Concern of a bacteria contamination has pushed McNeil Consumer Healthcare (a Johnson & Johnson company) along with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to issue a voluntary recall of several types of Children’s TYLENOL.

An electronic letter dated September 18 states:

The company has implemented this recall because examination of bulk raw material detected that one of the inactive ingredients did not meet internal testing requirements. Specifically, the gram-negative bacteria Burkholderia cepacia (B. cepacia) was detected.

The bacteria can be potentially harmful to those with compromised immune systems and chronic conditions such as cystic fibrosis and pulmonary disease.

The letter goes on to state the finished products still met specifications and the recall was only issued as a precaution. None of the bacteria had been detected in any tests of the products in question.

Although no notices have been found on either the FDA or McNeil sites, the TYLENOL Professional site has the letter announcing the recall. The products were available April 2008 in stores nationwide.

Consumers who have one of the affected products are asked to call the customer care line at 1-800-962-5357 and they will receive a coupon for a new bottle. A complete list including the lot numbers is located below.
