Should Governor O’Malley be Fired Up or just plain Fired?!
As America’s President came through the Free State of Maryland yesterday, touting a health care plan, that in all its forms and separate bills is unpopular amongst the majority of Americans, Maryland’s delegation was on hand to welcome our Commander-in-Chief.
However as Governor O’Malley and the Democratic Party sent out an e-mail blast regarding how progressive and successful Maryland’s health coverage has been under this administration, one must wonder how that can be in the midst of one of the worst financial mismanagements of any administration? As Maryland faces another round of cuts, anywhere from $230-$300 million, this is an excerpt of the Governor’s message:
“In Maryland, more than 22 cents of every tax dollar go towards some form of healthcare, and it’s expected to rise exponentially in the coming years.”
So this year alone we have had $735 million in budget cuts, including furloughs and lay-offs, with another $300 million to follow, facing a projected $2 billion dollar budget shortfall for next year’s fiscal cycle, yet you are touting rising costs for healthcare, or just more taxes saddled onto the backs of hard working, some now unemployed, Marylanders’?
Does this make any fiscal sense? Let’s see how others are viewing the current crisis we are in:
"We have a significant cut, and we have a significant mess on our hands," said Comptroller Peter Franchot, who sits on the state's revenue board. "The question is: Is the beginning of the economic recovery real, or are we simply treading water here?"
"We have made a number of deep cuts, and once again we're going to have to go back to the drawing board," said Budget Secretary T. Eloise Foster
Warren G. Deschenaux, the legislature's chief fiscal analyst, characterized the budget situation as "quite serious." He said "the governor and General Assembly have a number of big-ticket options for paring the budget, including shifting more costs to local governments, further shrinking the work force and reducing health care and retirement benefits for state employees."
So is Governor O’Malley delirious, confused or just plain lying? Well I think the Minority Leader in the House said it best:
"We spend more than we take in; it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out," said House Minority Leader Anthony J. O'Donnell, a Southern Maryland Republican. "It's mismanagement."
The question is…what do you, the voter think? Sound off here or e-mail your concerns to your elected officials, including Governor O’Malley.
