Israeli/Palestinian Map
When we take a look at the current ongoing conflict in the Middle East, next to the Iraqi unsettlement in Baghdad, between the Israeli government and the Palestinian-driven and Hamas controlled PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization), we tend to take sides without any real knowledge or history, of this land struggle. A person, who speaks without proper knowledge of the issue at hand, usually believes strictly based on ignorant influence, of mass media and American propaganda.

This political conflict, not religious, as some would have you believe, has had a decade-long history, of land-controlled opposition, by both parties. The on-going attempt of a two-state solution has been a thorn in the side of every Israeli Prime Minister and Palestinian leader since the late 19th century. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict stems from competing Jewish and Arab national aspirations for the region of Palestine, conflicting promises by the British in the forms of the Hussein-McMahon Correspondence and the Balfour Declaration of 1917, and several outbreaks of violence between Jewish and Arab residents of the region of Palestine.

From the 1917 Balfour Declaration, issued by former British Conservative politician and statesman, Arthur J. Balfour, to the 1993 Oslo Peace Process, to the 2000 al-Aqsa Intifada, that has still yet to be fulfilled or ended. A long history of once-controlled land, taken over by displaced Israeli families, since the Holocausts, have led to a divided country of pissed off Palestinians and inherited Israeli Jews.

The formation of Hamas, founded by Ahmed Yassin and Abdel Aziz al-Rantissi, following the First Intifada of 1987, has saw the uprising, spread throughout Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem. This was a renowned stone-throwing demonstrative protest, by young Palestinians’, against the heavily-armed Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
During this time of strife, approximately a little over 1,500 Palestinians and 400 Israelis were killed, which did not end up solving anything.

This led to the Oslo Peace Process, beginning in 1993, and was a key turning point in the regions conflict. During the negotiating process, the PLO was permitted to form the autonomous Palestinian Authority, to run Palestinian affairs, in the Gaza Strip and West Bank. The mutual co-existence and recognition of Israel was always a part of continual contention, with the extent of Palestinians believing in and recognizing the right of Israeli existence.

However this peace process broke down and failed in 2000, which led to the current existence of the Second Intifada, known as al-Aqsa Intifada. This led to the 2003 Disengagement Plan, by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. This plan sought the removal of civilian and military presence in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, (21) Jewish settlements in the former and four in the latter. Continued supervision of the border crossing in Egypt, which is jointly run by the Palestinian National Authority, in conjunction with the European Union, was given in order to claim that the Gaza Strip was not occupied territory.

However others argue that the Israeli West Bank Barrier, “the wall”, was still needed to maintain the situation in the West Bank. The DP was implemented in 2005. However with the 2006 elections, for Palestinian Legislative Council, being won and controlled by Hamas, it ultimately led to the Western civilization denouncement, of the new ruling Party, and the current struggles of the Palestinian people. Though the ascension to power of Ismail Haniyeh as Prime Minister, was never recognized by Israel (or their pals the United States), the people of Palestine continue to view them (Hamas), as their governmental leadership.

The current Palestinian state of existence, has a Mahmoud Abbas led PLO, which is currently controlled by Hamas, is fighting a duality divided Israeli government. The upcoming Israeli elections (February ’09), surely has a lot to do with the current onslaught of F-16 fighter jets and Apache helicopters, financed by none other than the United States of ‘Everyone’!

Since the resignation of Prime Minister Olmert, Madame Tzipi Livini, the interim P.M., has unsuccessfully tried to collate the Israeli government, which was turned away due to her seemingly weak position. Therefore, with the leading two contenders for Prime Minister, being former PM’s themselves, she now must try to convince the Israeli public that she is stronger than both and can lead the country despite her recently failed coalition attempt and the Olmert failure of the Gaza Disengagement Plan.

Tomorrow, we will examine the real politics behind this current insurgence and the political figures of importance. From the Hamas and Palestinian Authority conflicts, to the Israeli elections of 2009, we will see how other countries election woes counter our own and are almost as strenuous and disengaging.

Dale's Daily Dose: "When I had to decide between continued extortion and bringing forward elections, I preferred elections." - Tzini Livini, Acting Israeli Prime Minsiter
