Conservatism v. Liberalism Part IV: The history of…: Party pasts, pre

DNC v. RNC - 2009-12
sent and possible future.

From Goldwater to Reagan and LBJ to Clinton, former reformers and past Presidents are possibly the thing of the past, when it comes to the political leadership of America. We currently have a consultant/radio and talk show host following, leading into a dismal future of cultural chaos. The prior practices of American-valued politics and representation, have given way to these left-leaning, ultra-right winged programs and their commentators. Shall we now live our lives following the “soap box” socialist ideals of these people? Or is now the time to break from the norm and begin thinking outside the box of electoral engineering?

The 1960’s brought about a strange yet decisive change of political posturing and the way these elected officials viewed the countries electorate. After the ’65 Voting Rights Act, coupled with the prior passing of the Civil Rights Act in ‘64, they now had to focus beyond their voter-based constituents and concentrate on how to appease a base of individuals, never before seen or understood in their inner circles. This new constituency, though very beneficial to the Party of Democrats that reluctantly, yet decisively, backed this agenda, proved even more imperative to the base of the GOP, who used this passage as a rallying cry of change, to their core supporters.

Coupled with the dysfunctional handling of the Vietnam War, the Goldwater-based Conservatives and others, realized the opportunity to begin a political power-grab, focused on racial division and the fatigue, of consistent and fatal war-casualties. However, though this strategy worked, through the election of Richard Nixon, it never came to long-term fruition, due to the Watergate scandal and impeachment of “Tricky Dick”!

Following this debacle we saw the change over for Democrats last only a “New York hot-minute”, with the election and ouster of Jimmy Carter. Only serving a brief four-year term, the conservative based country known as the United States, brought forth the famed actor from Illinois, Mr. Ronald Reagan. As mentioned in one of the earlier articles of this series, President Reagan became the new standard bearer of conservatism for the American GOP. The bi-partisan love he brought (lol), with consistently high approval ratings, enabled this administration to build a broad and thorough-based, consistent constituency. However, after his (2) term maximum, the Republicans brought forth the VP they thought would carry the parties message to prominence, George H.W. Bush. Boy was they wrong!

The Texas-styled southerner had a decent approval rating and time in office, yet couldn’t shake the Saddam Hussein based election of ’92, where he went up against possibly the greatest Democratic party boss since JFK, William “Bill” Clinton. The young Governor of Arkansas, with the former Goldwater conservative Democratic wife, was able to overcome national nostalgia, and ease his way into the House of Power. However, though perceived to be the building bridge to Democratic dominance, like Nixon, found himself in deep doo-doo, when confronted with and eventually brought forth for illicit sexual behaviors in the White House. And it wasn’t with his beautiful wife either! Instead, the W.H. Intern Monica Lewinsky, sunk the ship of Liberal Legacy, and brought the Democrats to their knees with the election, (or selection) of George W. Bush.

The son of the 41st President, former Texas Rangers owner and Lone-Star Governor, squeaked through the closest election of our time. Though decided through the Electoral College, with the Supreme Court and Congress stamp of approval, after losing the popular vote, President Bush definitely owes his sole existence to evangelistic conservatives and Karl Rove. The “Architect” (or Turd-Blossom) basically brought that election and the entire Bush career to fruition and enabled a body of like minded people, to have their new and improved, ‘conservative chief’!

Now we have America’s first African-American President (about time), but even more than that, we have another ‘liberal leader’ for a Party ready and set, to take over American politics and try to lead it to its prominence! Will we have another FDR/Truman 20-year service by one party, following a financial disaster? Or will the Democrats, who currently control all (3) chambers of Government (House, Senate and White House), mess it up again, and make way f or another GOP galvanizing period of supremacy?

Though neither is suitable or acceptable to my standards of service, the following and last article of this series, Independence: Making the argument for It and against party Politics, will speak to, why these past decades were a sign of their times, yet a new styled-thinking and format of politics is on its way to America. Where is it coming from? When will it get here? And how shall it affect me, my family, my community and my country? Tune in tomorrow and find out!
