History of Conservatism vs Liberalism: The insanity of beliefs from the 80's until now
Part III of a series
“Someone once told me that Politics is the second oldest profession in this country; however it seems somewhat similar to America’s oldest, Prostitution.” Spoken like a true politician, from the mouth of probably the greatest (next to Lincoln) President of the United States, to the right-wing conservative branch of the Republican Party.
The famed actor turned President, heralded as the great equalizer of this Generation, definitely put his stamp on electoral history. The 1980-88, two-term U.S. President, pulled together Democrats (Blue Dog mostly) and Republicans alike and sent the Great Wall tumbling, while ending the Cold War. Though he did almost get caught up in impeachment-convicting turmoil, with the Iran-Contra episode, most seem to remember him and his “just say no to drugs” wife Nancy, as the power couple of the Century.
Then of course, in 1988, following eight years of successful governing, brought the election of Reagan’s predecessor, George W. Bush. The former southern Vice-President, from Texas, stepped up to the mantle ready to change the world. However, four years and a Saddam Hussein fight later; he was trounced by the little-old Governor from Arkansas.
William “Sweat Meat Bill” Clinton, the two-term President, who became known more for his illicit sexual White House escapades, then for his eight years of governing. Of course, his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, who stuck with him during those “sticky” times, became the N.Y. U.S. Senator, 2008 Presidential Democratic Primary contestant and is now set to become the next Secretary of State for this great country. Set to serve her adversarial competitor in the Primaries, President-Elect Barack Obama.
However, President Clinton’s years were not filled with pure pain nor joy, but a balanced attack of both. His transition became bumpy when he relied on naming more Chiefs, before actually aligning any Indians, to follow their commands. Then came perhaps the greatest sweeping control of Congress, in one election cycle, we have ever seen; the ’94 Contract with America and the Newt Gingrich-designed takeover. With Congressman Gingrich, at the helm in the House, as Speaker, along with Senator Tom Delay’s leadership in the opposite chamber, there was no stopping the Republican railroad of success. Except the ’98 Congressional elections, where Newt bet his “legislative life” on another sweeping victory, at the polls, for the GOP; based on the Monica Lewinsky-Clinton impeachment scandal. Speaker Gingrich lost that battle and resigned his post, thus leaving the door open for Democratics' to win back the Presidency, in the next (2) years.
Well, all those hopes came-ah crashing down, with the super close victory of George H.W. Bush, in 2000. Of course that will always be remembered as the ‘stolen election’ of Florida disenfranchisement. However, though losing the popular vote, George Bush II, won the electoral vote through Supreme Court and Congressional approval. And as they say, the rest is history, including the last eight years of complete and utter heartache and pain.
From the 2001 bombing, plane crashing, of the twin towers and the Pentagon, to the 2003 Invasion of Iraq, this administration has had the worst record of positive achievement, EVER! From record unemployment rates, to dismal financial times (possibly the worst fiscal depression of all time or at least since the 1929 Great Depression), this brand of totalitarianism conservatism has turned away a lot of possible Republican recruits, thus basically losing the ’08 elections for the Party, without even being on the ticket!
From the Goldwater Conservatives to the Reagan-brand moderates to the Clintonian-styled Liberals (“Progressives”), these labels have yet to really speak to or make any real difference in the lives of real/true Americans. Unless negative, none of these administrations nor its Congressional Captains, have led me or my family to great promise or any undying loyalty. In fact when you look at the partisan bickering and divide that these parties have brought, as of late, there is no wonder that America is looking for a ‘Change’, in Barack Obama.
We, as a Country, community, citizen and as a whole, need to do and expect better, and more! We can no longer let our standard bearer in politics be the lesser of two evils, yet we must demand respect and individual commitment from our elected officials. And we will never be able to do such under this, 'pay-me and I’ll tell the masses what you want them to hear', style of Party politics. The bosses and legislative leaders are making too much money and hold too much power to ever let us, as a community or a people, gain too much power! Therefore, we must negate their message of hope through financial giving’s and volunteered efforts of Party outreach, and do for ourselves through an Independent-based message of individualism, personal responsibility and community-styled change! Not for the party but for the people!
Part IV tomorrow, will discuss the future of politics, their party systems and where we must, or will end up, going as a people, in the future! Thank you for your continued support and your unbiased opinion(s) of my writings, views and beliefs. Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinions and beliefs, regardless of conservative, liberal and none of the above. Therefore, let’s not be so critical and negative to those who don’t share the same vision as us! We can all probably agree on something, at some point, therefore live your life for you and yours, and let others live theirs! Until Tomorrow, have a blessed and beautiful Friday of al-Jumu’ah!
