The Memphis Grizzlies trimmed their roster today (Thursday), waiving 6-5 guard Thomas Gardner. The former Missouri Tiger appeared in Tuesday’s preseason game against the Washington Wizards, logging four minutes, two points, and a rebound. He did not play in Wednesday night’s win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. In two previous seasons, Gardner played in a total of 20 games with NBA teams.
With a glut of guards in camp, including Allen Iverson, O. J. Mayo, Mike Conley, Marcus Williams, and Mike Taylor, Gardner was never considered likely to make the Grizzlies' regular season roster. Rookie swingman Sam Young could also see playing time at shooting guard.
Gardner’s release leaves the Grizzlies with 16 players on the roster, though veteran guard Marko Jaric is not with the team, and has been given permission to seek another team. NBA teams carry between 13 and 15 players on their regular season rosters.
The Grizzlies continue preseason play Sunday at Dallas, with home games on tap Monday and Wednesday of next week. The regular season opens Wednesday, October 28th, at home against Iverson’s former team, the Detroit Pistons.
