In a new memo issued today, by the Justice Department, medical marijuana patients or their suppliers will not be targeting for federal prosecution in States that allow medical marijuana.
The memo written by Deputy Attorney General David Ogden, continues to state that arresting people who use or provide medical marijuana was not a good use of federal manpower. Although, federal agents will continue to go after people whose marijuana distribution as a cover for other crimes or go beyond what is permitted under state law. The memo also says that prosecutors should pursue marijuana cases that involve violence, illegal use of firearms, selling pot to minors, and money laundering.
"This is a major step forward. This change in policy moves the federal government dramatically toward respecting scientific and practical reality," said Bruce Mirken, communications director for the Marijuana Policy Project.
Not everyone agrees though, "We cannot hope to eradicate the drug trade if we do not first address the cash cow for most drug trafficking organizations - marijuana," said Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas
