Cleveland Browns Owner Randy Lerner told reporters yesterday that he was "sick" about the direction of his struggling football team. The Cleveland, native also promised that he will seek a new leader to help connect with the fans, likely a team president, and that Head Coach Eric Mangini's job is safe.
Among his multiple statements in the past few days, not only about the team's poor play but also a scheduled fan protest, Lerner seemed especially broken yesterday. Unfortunately for the boss, it was his quick decision to hire the power-hungry Mangini before trying to employ a "strong, credible, serious" leader for the front office. Lerner's gut reaction in replacing Romeo Crennel last season has his loyal fan base up in arms over both the effort of Mangini and struggles at quarterback as Cleveland Sports Examiner Cory Felegy described in this article.
For those fans who want to see Mangini fired at the end of the season, one factor must be considered: Lerner is already spending gobs of money on fired former GM Phil Savage and Crennel. That is not to say that Lerner will not go back on his word and fire Mangini but it stands to reason that he will have to really like another option to spend even more money on non-employees. As unlikely as it may be, former Steelers legendary Head Coach Bill Cowher may be the one man who would make Lerner seriously reconsider his stance. Nevertheless, ending his three-year hiatus as an NFL coach in Cleveland will likely not appeal to the future Hall of Famer.
In hopes of finding something positive for Browns fans, at least the bye week is finally here! With the next showdown coming on a Monday Night against Baltimore, fans have over two weeks to recuperate from another lost season. Right now the Browns not playing has to be considered a victory for all Browns employees and the frustrated fan base. Expecting more victories in the future may not be a promising premise, however...
