More than a quarter of a million wooden backyard play sets were recalled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Adventure Playsets, of Amarillo, Texas due to a fall hazard.
The CPSC reports that most of the injuries occurred after lumber on the horizontal ladder of the monkey bar and swing beam weakened from the wood rotting.
More than 1,400 rotting ladders were reported to the company, including 16 injuries that led to nine emergency room visits. Injuries included two arm fractures, as well as bruises, scrapes and lacerations. Most were injured when the rotting wood led to the swing coming out of the beam.
Each playset involved in the recall is a wooden set with swings, ladders and slides and includes an overhead monkey bar ladder that acts as both the monkey bar and a swing beam.
The sets were sold nationwide at Walmart, Toys R Us, Academy Sports, Menards, and Mill stores, online at Walmart.com, ToyRUs.com, Willygoat.com and through the DMSI catalog from January 2004 through December 2007 for between $300 and $600.
Owners of these playsets should stop use immediately and contact the company for a repair kit. Contact Adventure Playsets by calling (877) 840-9068 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT weekdays,e-mailing the firm at custservice@adventureplaysets.com or logging on to Adventure Playsets' web site.
