In June 1962, Eunice Kennedy Shriver started a day camp for children and adults with intellectual disabilities at her home in Maryland. She wanted to explore their capabilities in sports and physical activities. From this grew the Special Olympics which held their first summer games in July, 1968.
Special Olympics Georgia is gearing up for the winter games on Jan. 16-18 in Cobb County. With competitions in ice skating, basketball, bowling, gymnastics and other sports, it looks to be very exciting.
Over 1500 athletes will be competing in the upcoming winter games. Few things are more inspirational than watching these athletes compete, especially when you consider what athletes in general endure to compete. It makes the accomplishments of these special athletes even more inspirational. Even life-changing.
It is a positive influence in these athlete's lives. It can be a positive influence on all lives.
The Special Olympics Athlete Oath are words everyone can live by: "Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt."
