Beginning on Tuesday, October 20, the Tribeca Performing Art Center will host the film series Scenes from the Cinema Lens, a film retrospective that focuses on legends of jazz’s past and their appearances on film. The series will feature several luminaries of the jazz community and their often-historic presence on film.

The series is curated by Krin Gabbard, a professor of Comparative Literature and English at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. To be shown over three separate evenings, the first event will focus on Big Bands on Film and will feature new and rare footage of Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Gene Krupa and others. All three events begin at 7:30 and are free.

Scenes from the Cinema Lens is a film series that concentrates on the performing arts in film. Each screening observes a different subject and will give audiences a chance to see well-known artists in films both popular and little known. This season will heavily emphasize jazz orchestras and vocalists such as Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone.

Two more events are planned for February and April 2010. For more information, please visit the Tribeca Performing Art Center’s website.
