Whether you are thinking about  starting your own business or already run a business, I highly recommend signing up for the "Start Your Business 101", sponsored by the Asian Women in Business organization of NYC.

The first session was taught by Joyce Moy, Executive Director of the Asian American/Asian American Research Institute of City University of New York. Her approach to entrepreneurship is direct and extremely value packed. Ms. Moy covered five topics in detail, stressing above all that one goes into business "to make money"! Her audience included entrepreneurs in the food industry, fashion, artisans, artists, construction, business advisors and  Seedco.

Topics covered:

  1. Are you Entrepreneurial Material?
Ms. Moy stressed the importance of evaluating your strengths and weaknesses before venturing into business ownership. This includes support systems, both financially and emotionally. One of the big questions to answer is what is your tolerance for risk?
  2. Your Mind Set
Learn the language of business. Broaden your perspectives and learn to articulate your ideas.
  3. Prepare for Entrepreneurship
Ms. Moy has an extensive background as a tax attorney and stressed the importance of budgets, credit and SMART goal setting.
  4. Avoiding the "Fs". Failure to:
Plan - Run Your Enterprise like a Business - Capitalize Adequately - Look at things differently - Put Infrastructure In Place
  5. The Nuts and Bolts of Starting a Business
    A. Choosing the right professionals such as an accountant that understands small business, an attorney who understands commercial real estate and a banker whom you can build a strong relationship with.
    B. Forms of Business Ownership
Sole Proprietor - General Partnership - S Corporation - Limited Liability Company
