e
The American Film Institute honored Douglas along with a list of who’s who in Hollywood June 11th on the Sony Lot. Celebrities such as Jesse Metcalfe, Kirk Douglas, Matthew McConaughey, Melanie Griffith, Tobey Maguire, Warren Beatty. Eric McCormack, Benicio Del Toro, Jack Nicolson, Anne Archer, Bai Ling, Catherine Zeta Jones, Christopher Lloyd, Hugh Hefner, Jane Seymour, Bob Dylan, Sharon Stone, Kiefer Sutherland came out to support.
Douglas made quite an entrance after a clip montage playing on a large screen concluded with the climactic dinner entrance scene from Douglas's 1997 film ‘the game’ where his character falls from atop a building and crashes through a glass ceiling. A stunt double fell through the ceiling above the sound stage and landed behind a partition. A few seconds later Douglas reappeared and popped his head up behind the partition dusting himself off as the crowd exploded with laughter. He walked from the stage giving hugs to past costars before joining his family at the main table.
Catherine Zeta Jones opened the show with a performance from ‘A Chorus Line’ singing ‘One’ along with a kick line of singers and dancers. Douglas was moved to tears and blew a few kisses to his wife. The evening was full of clips from hit films such as ‘The China Syndrome’, ‘Basic Instinct’ and ‘Wall Street’ to name a few. Co-Stars from past and present introduced the clips and shared stories of what it was like working with Douglas.
Jack Nicholson, who arrived after the Laker Game, appeared on stage and presented the award to Michael Douglas. Douglas thanked his parents and credited his success to their ‘great genes’.
The AFI salute to Douglas aires on TV LAND on July 19th, 2009.
