Christo and Jeanne-Claude Discuss "Over The River" Project in Colorado
While vacationing in Colorado, I attended a special public meeting on Wednesday July 8, 2009 in Salida, Colorado featuring internationally renowned artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude.
At the meeting, Christo and Jeanne-Claude gave a slideshow showing many of their famous artistic projects around the world, including "Wrapped Reichstag" in Berlin (1995) and "The Gates, Central Park, New York City" (2005). They then discussed in great detail, their plans for their "Over The River" project.
During the summers of 1992, 1993, and 1994, Christo and Jeanne-Claude visited 89 rivers before choosing the Arkansas River in Colorado for "Over The River."
Since then, Christo and Jeanne-Claude have had many meetings with local and national officials, and are working to obtain the necessary permits so they can begin the installation process.
Their fact sheet elaborates: "For 'Over The River', the artists will suspend horizontally a total of 5.9 miles of silvery, luminous fabric panels high above the Arkansas River along a 40-mile stretch of the river between Salida and Canon City in south-central Colorado."
I asked Christo and Jeanne-Claude about the artistic message of "Over The River." Jeanne-Claude replied:"The message is the same as all of our works. We wish to create a work of art of joy and beauty."
Christo added:"We also want to engage people to have their own interpretation."
If "Over The River" is approved, it will be exhibited for two weeks in summer 2013 "at the earliest."
