There are so many great films coming out this month, I'm splitting my list into two parts. Here are the first five films I'll be seeing in November.
A Christmas Carol (November 6th)
What It’s About
If you don’t know the story of A Christmas Carol, shame on you. This animated version of Dickens’ classic tale takes Ebenezer Scrooge on a hilarious and heartwrenching journey of redemption like never before.
Why You Should See It
The combination of Jim Carrey and Robert Zemeckis are certainly enough to make me rush to theaters. Zemeckis, whose other animated credits include Monster House and The Polar Express, is well-known for his gift of special effects; it will be fascinating to see what he does with one of the most beloved Christmas stories of all time. Carrey will be voicing not one, but three characters in the film: Ebenezer Scrooge and all three Christmas ghosts. Then, of course, there’s the fact that you can watch it in 3-D…
The Men Who Stare At Goats (November 6th)
What It’s About
In this dark comedy, a reporter meets a special forces agent who is a part of a secret military unit that uses psychic powers to fight wars. When the head of the unit goes missing, the reporter and the agent must track him to a covert training camp. George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey, and Jeff Bridges star.
Why You Should See It
As crazy as the plot sounds, it’s actually based on the non-fiction bestseller by Jon Ronson, which explored the army’s experiments with the paranormal. The film, directed by Grant Heslov (Tony, Par 6), promises to be quirky and hilarious. Who wouldn’t want to see Kevin Spacey play a turncoat psychic soldier?
Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire (November 6th)
What It’s About
An illiterate, pregnant teen in Harlem is offered a chance to attend a school where she might be able to turn her life around. Mo’Nique and newcomer Gabby Sidibe star in this film directed by Lee Daniels (Shadowboxer, Monster’s Ball).
Why You Should See It
Precious won three awards at Sundance and is already generating Oscar buzz for Mo’Nique as a supporting actress. If you don’t care about the film’s Oscar-worthy attributes, you could always go see it just on the off-chance that Mariah Carey will flop.
2012 (November 13th)
What It’s About
Roland Emmerich (The Day After Tomorrow) co-wrote the script for 2012 with Harald Kloser (10,000 B.C.). The film, which stars John Cusack and Amanda Peet, revolves around a global cataclysm that brings about the end of the world. Danny Glover, Thandie Newton, and Woody Harrelson also star.
Why You Should See It
Who doesn’t love a good disaster film? Just like all the others, this one has the potential to either be awesome or awful, but you can bet it will an interesting ride. Of course, John Cusack and that super cute kid might just save the film… and the world.
Pirate Radio (November 13th)
What It’s About
Bill Nighy and Philip Seymour Hoffman star in this offbeat comedy about an illegal radio station in 1960s Britain. Formerly titled The Boat That Rocked, Pirate Radio is finally being released in U.S. theaters after months of the international circuit. Richard Curtis (Bridget Jones’s Diary) writes and directs.
Why You Should See It
The tagline reads, “One Boat. Eight DJs. No Morals.” Sounds like a recipe for a hilarious film with a fantastic cast of American and British talent. Nighy and Hoffman are joined by Emma Thompson, Kenneth Branagh, and Jack Davenport (among others). You can’t turn down a cast like that!
